Office Productivity: My 20 Steps to Improve Your Productivity – Avoid Sugary Snacks

Welcome back!

No, I am not trying to imitate your mother! But Mom’s sage advice is usually correct.

When you intake a large amount of sugar, your body raises up and rides that “high” wave of sugar. The body uses it in it’s muscles and it gets burned pretty quick. Once it does, the body comes crashing down to earth again, only to be left with more fatigue previous to the sugary snack.

If you want to give yourself a boost (or boosts) throughout the day, eat protein snacks. The protein feeds the body longer than sugar and can level out the insulin levels in the body so that you do not experience the “highs” and “lows”. Another snack to watch out for are snack high in carbohydrates. Carbs turn into sugar, which starts the vicious sugar cycle all over again.

Veggies are a great option for snacks throughout the day. A lot of them are portable, once they are cut up (carrots, celery, cauliflower, broccoli, peppers) and not only do they provide protein, but they are a much more natural way to get the body pumping.

Peanut butter is a great source of protein as well, but due to the recent salmonella outbreak, one has to be very careful when choosing a brand. More healthy alternatives are almond butter, sunflower butter and other nut butters. If’ you’ve not tried of varieties of butters, I suggest that you give them a go! They really are quite tasty and some are healthier than peanut butter.

What are you favorite snacks during the day? Have you noticed any adverse effects form the? Tell me in the comments!

Personal Productivity: A Productivity Consultants’ Look at Windows 7 beta 7000

Yes, I”m a geek.

But I think we all know that by now, right? :D

I’ve been beta testing Windows 7 for about a week now. I installed last Saturday, as an upgrade, and did a fresh install on Wednesday. It is my only OS at the moment, I”m not running dual boot.

When I beta tested for Vista, I feel in love with Vista. All the quirks and issues that others seemed to have just didn’t effect me. Vista ran smoothly and still did up until I installed Windows 7.

Windows 7 is a big improvement upon the Vista codebase. It is VERY quick, and light on resources. I think that my clean install took about twenty minutes (yes, 20)! It is easy to configure and lightening fast. Take a look at the Task Manager screenshot below:

TM It also contains the eye candy that Vista has with the Aero effect. Glassy and transparent screen borders with endless options for color. What’s new in Windows 7 is that it now supports themes that can be downloaded to trick out your version of Windows 7. Take a look at the crisp graphics of my desktop in the picture below:

Win7On  the left you will see RocketDock and on the right Google Desktop Sidebar. The only issue that I have found with the Google Sidebar is that the new Gmail gadget does not work. It hangs while loading.

One other new thing to note is the tree view when you open or save a document.

Folders

The tree on the left is configurable, meaning that you can add your own hotlinks to it. The My Documents folder has been revamped to include the option of picking more than one folder to be linked to your My Documents library. “Library” meaning that more that just the My Document folder can be included within.

I liked Vista and I really like Windows 7. There are a plethora of other good updates and changes from Vista. For a more detailed review, go to the How-To Geek.

So have you tried Windows 7? What do you think? Tell me in the comments.

Personal Productivity: Mid-Afternoon Naps are Just the Ticket!

Dr. Gregg D. Jacobs
July 27, 2004

Many people feel a mid-afternoon slump in mood and alertness, especially after a poor night of sleep. Many believe that this slump is caused by eating a heavy lunch. However, in reality, this occurs because we were meant to have a mid-afternoon nap.

Implemented by cultures near the equator, presumable to escape the hot mid-day sun, nature intended that we take a nap in the middle of the day. Along with a slight drop in body temperature, it seems as if we have a biological readiness for sleep in the afternoons. Whether lunch is consumed or not, the wont to take an afternoon nap is still as strong one.Afternoon_Nap_Time-1600x1200

Research shows that an afternoon nap as short at ten minutes can enhance mood, alertness and mental performance especially after a night when you haven’t had a good nights sleep.

Now you may think that taking an afternoon nap will make you more tired, but quite the opposite is true. A nap of no longer than 45 can leave you feeling refresh and energized, after the sleep inertia (grogginess) dissipates.

Unfortunately, the culture in the USA had been structured as such to allow for an afternoon nap. Most places barely get a half hour for lunch, and some people choose not to take a lunch at all, but work and eat lunch at the same time. I have to raise my hand and join that group: I work through lunch so that I can work a straight eight hours and leave work early.

However, if you are forced to take an hour lunch ( I worked for a business owner that forced us to take one hour lunches just because he was a control freak) then you have a prime opportunity to nap. I know that when my mother was still working, she would go into an empty conference room and take a 45 minute nap. She has sleep apnea and didn’t sleep very well until she got her CPAP machine. Grab a quiet place and do a power snooze. Set your watch or phone alarm and catch some Z’s!

So tell me in the comments: do you take a nap in the afternoon? Does it help you and if it does, how so?
