On taking a Brief Sabbatical

You may have noticed or you may have not that I was absent last week. This wasn’t so much intentional as it was needed. I have been writing on this blog for well over a year and have had posts five days a week at least, since I started this blog. I felt it was necessary to take a brief sabbatical to recharge my batteries. Not only that but I need to refocus my priorities and decide what I wanted to do with several areas in my life.

I took some time and tooled around the Internet doing some things on Facebook, staying away from my RSS feeds just to zone out the information and focusing on some things around the house. This has helped me immensely and I feel like I can start this new week fresh and with the clear peace of mind..

I’m still on the search for daytime employment, as I do not quite have enough clients yet to be able not to work  in a regular day job. As you all know and as I’ve mentioned before is my dream not to work at a regular day job and to only work on my organization and productivity consulting business. Business is slow to be built, especially in this economy, and it’s difficult to be able to network with people due to their own time constraints or their ability to devote time to speak with you. When the economy gets this way, it is imperative that people that have their own businesses focus on their clients and their ability to grow more clients. So their opportunities to talk to those that are comrades in their own fields are limited.

Over the next week I will be doing some intensive work for a client on a personal assisting type level. What I also want to get accomplished this week is a schedule of events in my area that I can go to a network with people. Obviously there’s Toastmasters in my area, but I do believe that they charge a membership fee to join and being laid off. I prefer not to spend any money. So I’m going to search online and see what I can find locally in my area that is free to attend.

Thanks for hanging in there for the week and know that I’m back in the saddle with a new focus… a fresh focus!

A Thought or Three About Christmas

My SO and I were discussing Christmas’ past and how it felt when we were kids. I can distinctly remember a very special feeling of anticipation, enjoyment and suspense when it came to Christmas and spending time with the family.

I also felt a bit of trepidation, too.

It was inevitable that my uncle would make my aunt cry. My uncle was a very difficult and verbally abusive individual. He had served during Pearl Harbor and had shrapnel in his back and knee. I don’t know if it was the constant pain or what, but he was about as unpleasant as a person can get. I would feel so bad for my aunt, and my Mom would always end up getting involved and telling him off royally (Mom is quite eloquent when it comes to telling someone off). Even so, I did look forward to the holidays. But I digress…..christmas-tree-inside-the-house

I wonder how the kids nowadays feel? Do they still get this special feeling, or because of the commercialization of Christmas, is that feeling lost and gone forever? How do your kids feel about it?

Another thing that has crossed my mind this year is parents having less money to shower their children with gifts. Now I know that some parents have brought up their children to value the holiday and family more than gifts. But with the media being the way it is with glorification of Christmas and telling children that they need all these gifts, how are they going to react when the tree base is not filled with gifts?

Is this situation going to make the parents feel guilty? Are the children going to add more grief and sorrow upon the parents because they think it’s their “right” to have a crapload of gifts?

Parents, all I can say is this: for your sake, I certainly hope that you have raised your children to value the holiday and family more than the gifts, and that you’ve also raised them well enough so that they will not manipulate you with guilt. If not, then you have no one to blame but yourself.

If they do expect things that you cannot always deliver, then it’s not too late to alter their thinking about this and re-direct them. It would be a benefit to the entire world for you to do so.

How have you raised your children to value Christmas?

Seven Things You Don’t Know About Me (and probably never wanted to know)

Hmmm…..

Seems I got tagged for a meme! That’s the first time it’s happened since I started this blog, so we’ll play along. eDragonu tagged me, the little imp! Seems a good post for a Monday, anyway!

  1. I very rarely eat steak. I am about 80% vegetarian, and the meats I do like are seldom eaten. Mostly hamburger, bbq pork, and some chicken.
  2. For six years of my early life, I went to Catholic school. My mom pulled me out after a nun searched my purse for no good reason, and hit me.
  3. My favorite food is spaghetti :)
  4. My favorite pastime is just relaxing with those I love, including our three dogs and one rabbit. We had two cats, but one died a year ago in November, and one died this May. She was 24 years old.
  5. I am afraid of heights – my stomach gets all flippy on a second story balcony!
  6. I was not well-liked in school because I had my own opinion, wasn’t a follower, and made my own way. Gee, I guess that you can’t tell that now, though, huh? ;)
  7. I’ve been with my SO for 7 years and we got married on December 30th, 2006.

Well there are seven useless things that you now know about me! Tell me one thing that I don’t know about you!

Oh, and I get to tag seven people:

Grant Griffiths, Follow on Twitter

Angelo Mandato, Follow on Twitter

David Williams, Follow on Twitter

Angela Allen Parker, Follow on Twitter

Andy Vitale, Follow on Twitter

Todd Jordan, Follow on Twitter

The Elusive GeekLawyer, Follow on Twitter

Nah, nah!!!
