Personal Productivity: Trusting Yourself & Your New System

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

I have seen it happen more than once: you’ve been in such an unorganized state of chaos that once you start to get organized, you have a hard time trusting yourself again.

Do you find this to be true?

When you’ve come from a state of total disorganization, you’ve learned not to trust yourself. You haven’t had a system that has ever worked for you, because you’ve still forgotten things or felt that you haven’t lived up to your expectations of yourself. When you don’t trust yourself, you have a very hard time being able to trust others to be able to Get Things Done for you and be productive for you. Disorganization can truly have rippling effects all throughout your life, both personal and business. It really is amazing how far the effects can be seen.

09 nail-biter Once you start to turn your life around, either by yourself or with someone’s assistance,  it is amazingly transformative how much of a far-reaching effect there is on your entire life. It can be very hard to get organized, especially on your own. It usually takes a catalyst like a book you’ve read or speaking to friends. For others it takes one on one training and coaching in order to be able to take the baby steps with confidence. Once you’ve been in a state of distrust for so long, it can be very hard to step out on your own because you have a hard time trusting yourself to be able to accomplish tasks and get organized.

Once you are on your path to recovering from being disorganized, I have seen people forget to trust themselves to be able to Get Things Done and get a great deal of productivity out of their lives.it can be a difficult change to get accustomed to once you’ve not trusted yourself for such a long period of time. It is completely normal to forget to trust yourself on the beginning of your organization and productivity journey, but once you get fully into the swing of things, you will see that your ability to trust yourself will slowly be restored. This is not a process that will occur overnight: try to remember how long you’ve been unorganized and then realize that it will take so time to get your trust of yourself and your systems into your routine.

It can be done, and the rewards are more fulfilling than can be described. Once you’ve been on your path, how long has it taken you to trust yourself and your system?

GTD Mastery 100: Part XXI – Trusting, Committing and Anxiety

GTDMastery100 61. When I put something into my inbox, I completely trust that it will get done…or I know why it’s not getting done and am comfortable with it.
This is one of the great things about the GTD methodology: if you use the system right, things that you put in your inbox will get done. I typically do those just previous to my Weekly Review so that I can see just exactly what I’ve accomplished from my inbox, and what needs to be put back in again for the following week.

62. When I commit to doing something for someone, I completely trust that I will do it…or I’ll let them know ahead of time why I can’t complete it.
I’ve written several articles about commitment and honoring what you tell people that you are going to do. I’ve made no secret that it is a BIG pet peeve of mine when people and corporations do not hold fast to what they tell me. So I would guess that my answer would come as no surprise.

I will always hold fast to what I tell someone. and if I am unable to hold up to my end of the commitment, you can bet your bottom dollar that I will tell you just as soon as I know. You can really make someone’s life very difficult by not sticking to your word.

63. That low-level anxiety I used to feel around my “stuff” and my work is completely gone.
I wouldn’t say that it’s completely gone, but I will say that it has lessened a great deal. Some of the minuscule details may fall by the wayside, but I’m proud to say that I am much more comfortable with my system than I was a year ago.

Tell me: how are you on trusting, committing and anxiety? Let me know in the comments!

Organization: elfa Closet Systems – A Review

My SO and I watch the show Clean House quite frequently. On the newer episodes of this show, they use elfa closet systems to organize the shows’ guests. We’ve really like the look of the elfa system, so we decided to purchase on for our bedroom closet.

We share this closet and it is a typical clothes closet being 60” wide. Fitting two people in a closet of this size is no easy task. Our elfa system arrived on Thursday and we installed it on Saturday.

Right off the bat, I noticed there were no instructions for assembly, so I had to call The Container Store and request directions. What I got were generic assembly instructions. Our closet space was a custom space de to our size constraints and needs. I had thought that this system would come with it’s own specific instructions, but it did not. I talked with the representative for about 15 minutes in order to get clarification on all the details for assembly.

It took us about one hour to assembly it. One thing I really like about the elfa systems is that there is only ONE component that has to be screwed into the wall, and that is the top track that holds the vertical standards. This is a big plus for people that live in apartments or rental properties of any kind. It minimizes the wall patching required.

Our system has four 21” hanging spaces, two long 57” shelves and four 17” shelves. We also purchased a four drawer free-standing piece for “daily wear” items.

It definitely does help for the closet organization and I was surprised on how many closets that we could each get on our two 21” hanging rods. I do feel that I did not get my moneys’ worth, though. This system was 30% off, and I still feel like I paid too much. I did not appreciate the lack of customized instructions for this piece. One would think that if you spent this much money on a system that they would ensure that you get instructions. They do have people that will come and assemble them for you, so it may be that they wish to deter you from DIY assembly.

We have other closets that we wish to organize, but will be going to Home Depot to look at their closet solutions first, to see if we can get a better deal for the same functionality.

Do any of you have elfa systems? Do you like them? Did you get assembly instructions? Tell me in the comments.

That’s GREAT! But there is much organization to be one before starting your own business. Let’s take a look

Wanting to start your own business comes with it’s own challenges and hurdles. But many of these can be prevented with planning ad organization.

Make a GOAL.
What do you want this business to do?
What is the long term goal?

Assess what you need.
What funds will this take?
What supplies do I need?
Will I need employees?
Where will I get my funding?
Will I need office space?
Will I need a freestanding building?

Organize Your Steps. You can plan those steps by the questions that you have asked yourself above. Sit down, in a quiet place, and answer those questions. Let all your thoughts about this business flow onto a piece of paper, a mind map, or a digital document. Plan every little step from the first thought to the inception.

By doing your homework and planning what your steps should be, or will find that the process of starting your own business can go smoother than you expect!
